Cinderella (2010) overture now complete…

September 1st, 2009

Hi folks, just posting to say that I’ve now completed the overture for Claire Goodwin theatre Arts School based in Winchester for their production of Cinderella scheduled for February 2010.

They’re setting the story in New York and it has a very up-beat storyline so that’s what I’ve gone for with this arrangement/composition.

Taking songs that will appear in the show, I’ve put together a snappy, fast-pase opening for the production, quite a bit shorter than stuff I’ve written for them in the past.

You can listen to a sample below. Enjoy…

The first dance at my brother’s wedding…

August 28th, 2009

Hi everyone, sorry its been such a long time since I last posted, but its been a very busy and emotional few months.

I wanted to get my brother Ben and his wife Lisa something completely unique as their wedding present, but I just couldn’t think of anything that someone else wouldn’t have chosen before. In the end I decided to write them a song.

I let them hear it a couple of days before the wedding and was totally thrilled when they chose it as their first dance instead of Eva Casady’s Songbird.

I’ve posted a sample of the track below, and as soon as I get a copy of the wedding DVD I’ll upload some footage of the first dance too.

Enjoy…

In Memorium…

June 13th, 2009

On Saturday the 30th of May 2009, my Grandfather Cyril Yorke sadly passed away aged 75. His funeral will be held this coming Tuesday.

One of his favourite songs of all time was Ave Maria, and I was asked to sing it at the funeral. However, I didn’t think I’d be able to do that, so I agreed to record a version of it instead to be played during the service.

I have included a shortened version here, and hope that you will listen peacefully and enjoy this recording, keeping in mind the background behind it. thank you.

All those singers…

May 15th, 2009

Well, I’ve been promising to do this for a while now, and here it is finally. I’ve spent some time going through my archive of recordings of my time as a singing teacher, and I’ve uploaded a collage of some of my fav. bits for you. It isn’t too long, and I’ve only included a bit of each recording otherwise you’d be listening to this for some time.

Some of the recordings were done during actual teaching sessions so they’re a bit rough and ready - full of my terrible live piano playing etc, while others were done in my recording studio. Everyone you’ll hear though, are young people I’ve taught over the years, and you’ll probably be able to pick my voice out doing harmoney here and there too.

Recognition must go to the students, passed and present of the Claire Goodwin Theatre Arts School in Winchester, to Katie Brewster who wrote the lyrics and melody line for Key To My Heart, and to Hanna Pickard who also features as a soloist in this recording.

I hope you’ll enjoy listening to these clips as much as I enjoyed working with the wonderful singers who feature in them.

Matt playing Nicholas Saunderson on the big screen!

May 10th, 2009

Well, perhaps not quite such a big screen, but here’s the short trailer for No Horizon that was filmed on location around Yorkshire and Cambridge. Personally I don’t think the guy playing young Nicholas looks anything like me lol! But here it is never the less!

You will need a player that supports Quicktime content to play this file. If you don’t already have a QT player, I like the Quicktime Alternative player because you don’t have to install the official one. You can get ithere.

DJ Leo B wins new commission…

May 10th, 2009

Well guys, its official, I’ve been commissioned to write the overture for Cinderella on Broadway, a new panto going up in the first quarter of 2010! Its gonna be set in the 50s so that’s a new chalange for me, but hey, I like chalanges! I’m thinking Guys And Dolls, that kinda jazzy Big Band sound! Yea!

Oh for all you Americans out there, panto, short for pantomime, is a great British tradition. I’m not going to give it to ya on a plate though, go and look it up if you don’t know what its all about! See, this is a very interactive, mind-expanding blog!

An Overture for Alice In Wonderland…

May 8th, 2009

Earlier this year the Theatre Arts school I used to teach at put on their production of Alice In Wonderland in Winchester. Although I’m no longer working for the school as a teacher, I still write and arrange music for them on occasion, and here’s a sample of the overture I wrote for the show. Enjoy…
